Hi, I'm Laura, and I'm the mom behind Bumba Swim.
Like many of you, I never set out to start a swimwear company. I was just a mom trying to find the best for my little one, and I kept coming up empty.
It Started with a Newborn
I was a first time mom and at six month old her first summer was coming up. I looked online to find a swimsuit that was cute, and made with natural fibers. While researching I quickly realized that most kids' swimwear is made with synthetic fabrics treated with harsh chemicals, dyes, and finishes. For children with sensitive skin, these materials can cause irritation, discomfort, and even allergic reactions.
I wanted something better. Something gentle, safe, and made with my child's health in mind.
The Search for Something Better
I spent hours searching for organic, eco-friendly swimwear that was truly safe for kids. What I found was disappointing:
- Most "eco-friendly" options were still made with synthetic materials
- Organic swimwear was hard to find and often poorly designed
- The few options that existed were either too expensive or didn't hold up to active play
As a mom who cares about both my child's health and the planet they'll inherit, I felt stuck. Why wasn't there a swimsuit that checked all the boxes, safe, sustainable, durable, and comfortable?
That's when I decided: if it doesn't exist, I'll create it.
Building Bumba Swim from the Ground Up
I didn't have a background in fashion or manufacturing. What I had was determination, a clear vision, and a deep belief that kids deserve better.
I researched natural fibers and discovered hemp, one of the most sustainable, durable, and naturally UV-protective materials on the planet. I learned about organic cotton and how it's grown without harmful pesticides or chemicals. I found low-impact dyes that are safe for sensitive skin and better for the environment.
Then came the hard part: finding manufacturers who shared my values, testing fabrics, perfecting designs, and making sure every detail met my standards as a mom.
It took time, trial and error, and a lot of late nights. But every step was worth it.
